If you’re interested in learning how to make audio to get your writing and ideas out into the world, I’m running an extended webinar called Making Waves just for you on Friday 24th November at 2pm UK Time (-5hrs Eastern Time; -8hrs Pacific Time). Scroll to the bottom to find an early bird discount code.
14.00-15.00 SESSION 1: The Possibilities
In this session, we think about the myriad of possibilities of audio, and what might best suit your idea, writing style and taste. We need to take into account your technical ability and overall aims for the project. Oh yes, overall aims are well worth thinking about. The possibilities are so huge, but there’s a lot of work ahead, how do we focus on what’s going to make the most impact? Plenty of advice to make sure you’re not wasting your time, energy, money and opportunities.
There will be a short break.
15.30-16.30pm SESSION 2: The Writing
If you want to make high-quality audio, you’re going to need to write scripts so everyone’s literally on the same page. You will save yourself hours of time editing if the script is tight, although it’s always good to have a bit of wriggle room. But what is the key to writing audio? Many of the skills are the same as writing for stage and screen, and we’ll go through story and character, but how does it work in the dark? Good news. You can make audio look like a million dollars in the mind of the listener. In this session, we’ll see that writing audio opens giant doors into wonderful worlds.
16.30pm Q&A on SESSIONS 1 and 2
Ask James anything about what’s been covered so far.
17.00pm There will be a longer break.
18.00pm SESSION 3: The Practicalities
How do we turn those smoking hot scripts into audio gold? In this session, we try to keep it all super simple as we dig into the practicalities of recording and directors, find and work with actors, editing, sound effects, music and mixing – and how developing an appetite for scrambled eggs might save you money in the long term.
This session includes The Handy Guide to Microphones for People Who Find Talking About Microphones Incredibly Boring. The acronyms USB and XLR may come up, but remain calm. Together, we’ll get through this. And the $64,000 question: how much is all this going to cost?
There will be another short break.
19.30pm SESSION 4: The Platforms and Promotion
You’ve got some decent audio you’re actually proud of. Now what? Upload it? Where? How? We’ll think about platforms, like podcast apps, Audible, Apollo and how to put audio into all kinds of unexpected places. Whatever you’ve made needs to work for you and promote your writing and insights. What about artwork? Is there any money to be made? What happens next? Season 2? A kickstarter? Something else. How do we decide? We cover it all in this session.
20.30pm Q&A on SESSIONS 3 and 4 – and anything else!
9pm Finish. Phew. The sessions will be recorded and made available to attendees afterwards.
